Editorial Policy

This policy explains how TopRated NZ approaches sourcing, writing, factual updates, and editorial independence across directory and guide pages.

Last updated: 2 May 2026 Editorial standards

Editorial purpose

TopRated NZ publishes business pages and buyer guides to help people compare local providers more efficiently. We aim to make pages useful, readable, and commercially realistic for readers deciding who to shortlist next.

How information is sourced

We may use business websites, visible public business information, business-submitted information, and observable page-level details when preparing listings or guides. When a page includes ratings, reviews, addresses, images, or descriptive claims, we aim to use information that can be reasonably checked from public-facing material or a directly provided correction request.

  • We may rewrite business descriptions for clarity, consistency, and reader usefulness.
  • We may shorten, standardise, or reorganise category content so pages are easier to scan.
  • We do not treat a business-submitted description as automatically publication-ready.

Editorial independence

Editorial inclusion, ordering, and recommendation language are handled separately from advertising and listing enquiries. Commercial interest from a business does not guarantee a favourable editorial outcome.

Editorial independence principle TopRated can accept listing requests or advertising enquiries while still deciding separately whether a business belongs on a page, how it is described, and where it appears.

How we write and update pages

Some pages are structured directory pages generated from listing data. Others are handcrafted editorial guides written to explain buyer fit, service differences, and shortlist logic. We update pages when there is a better business fit, a factual correction, a changed category structure, or a stronger editorial reason to improve the page.

Clarity

We edit for plain language, scannability, and buyer usefulness.

Balance

We try to describe businesses by fit and strengths rather than generic praise.

Updates

We may refresh rankings, descriptions, and category coverage over time.

What we do not promise

  • We do not promise permanent inclusion on every page.
  • We do not promise a business will keep the same rank, copy, or guide position over time.
  • We do not promise a submitted listing will be published exactly as provided.
  • We do not promise that every page will include every relevant business in a category.
